Shark let the airplane smack her nose, giggling a bit, then bent to pick it up. Eagerly she unfolded it, and peered at the worksheet with interest. Yes, she had to privately agree, this would be a cool class. "Ryans, Shark." Eyes skimmed over the paper and she was pleased to find the alphabet quite familiar, and even a little bit of the phrases. At last, a class where she showed promise. Smiling at this thought, she patted her knapsack, which contained the beginner's sheet given to her by Rioze.
Nafel looks again at the paper. "Yes, I think that's right. So... "Hyf uja iyo?" She grins at Eka, waiting for a reply. She has a feeling that this class shall be quite interesting. Plus, she loves new languages.
\\ OOC: Oh, I was just giving you a few OOC sentences that I figure Tryph would have on her sheets, she wasn't ICly answering the question. \\ IC Tryphaena scribbles down the few remaining names, then looks around at her students, who were avidly reading the sheets she'd sent flying their way. Well, now was a good a time as ever to ask them their experience with the language; "Ladies and gents, now may I ask you, how much Ramathian do you know?" a pause, and a grin is added, "In other words; how fluent.. or rather.. anti-fluent.. are you in this ancient tongue?"
“E’n pyemd gjassi dyyp, iyo?" Eka smile she liked to learn new things. She then looked up at the teacher. “Well I am pretty new to this but my sister says that I’m a good learner. But I am more so not fluent" Eka said with a bit of a frown.
Jac looked at the paper she was reading, and frowned. She muttered a few of the words to herself. She looked up when the teacher asked the question. She had almost the exact differences as Eka did. Yet she spoke up. "I'm a bit of a slow learner...But if you make me say these words long enough, i'll learn 'em" She grinned and then said, "I only know one word in ramathian, 'Embupaj', which is my last name. It means, 'Invader.'" She grinned wider, "I'll make sure I try hard enough to Invade this subject!" She snickered to herself.
Nafel replies to Eka "E un pyemd fall!" In response to the teacher's query she replies "The only exposure I've had is my Elemental Magic class. I know spell words, but that's about it." She returns to studying her paper. She figures she needs to write her name, so she says a simple "Kyna." command to the writing utensil at her feet. It hops willingly into her paw, summoned by the spell.
Quxx took to the worksheets like a fish to water. After all, he already knew quite a bit of Ramathian and could almost carry out simple conversations. Key word: almost. Adopting an almost cocky attitude, he began to repeat the phrases in an elevated voice. Little did the 'dragon know that the majorty of the words he wasn't saying right.
“That so cool. I mean. Shus ty kyyl." She said to Nafel. She had to get use to speaking in Ramathian more. “Ni tetsaj et sucemd shus E shemc. Et es hujp?" Eka asked. She also tried to write a few word on a paper.
"Zilch. Nada. Zip. Zero. Except for maybe the alphabet," she replied, large eyes still fixed ont he paper grasped in her claws. Ears flicked briefly as they caught Quixx's eager recitement, and she almost snorted into her worksheet. The beguilement hadn't come from knowing that he was mispronouncing most of them, for if she had a way of knowing that then she wouldn't be in this class. Rather, it came just from the fact that his reply to the question had been to reel off Ramathian phrases, or so it seemed to her. Show-offs didn't really annoy the juvenile as much as they amused her.
"Same as Nafel. I know some spells in Ramathian, but I don't use spells much, and sometimes I can use some of the weaker elemental magic spells without saying a word, so I know very little.," Drak said, "ros E'n fellemd sy laujm!" Drak added reading the sentence he had written down by using the sheet.
Nafel smiles at the reaction to her spell."Nah, it's not really hard. Once you learn the basic elements of casting a spell and how it works, you just have to learn spells and practice. It did take me a while to learn the pen trick, though. So.... Huq ulg ebi oua?" She waits for a reply, happy to be occupied.
Eka smiled. Hoping that her healing class will be that same. “Fall E’n 1000, ros tnull vyj ni uda. Raemd tnull tynasenat hut es upbumsudat. Hyf uryos iyo?" Eka asked with the smile still on her face. She was starting to get a hang on Ramathian and was happy to have someone to take to.
Tryphaena's happy grin never falters, though, perhaps takes on a bit of amusement as Quxx begins his round of mispronounced phrases. She doesn't mention it, however. She was no tit-for-tat child, and he would see soon enough how to pronounce this language like a pro. "Good, good! All rather green in the tongue, then, hm?" she pauses for thought, then stands. Trotting on fours to the board, she writes out the ramathian alphabet, and underneath, the corresponding modern alphabet letters which make the same sounds as the ramathian characters. \\ OOC: I'm going to create a ramathian character for each letter, sometime in the future, so it looks credible. Not like english just scrambled. Â So, just bear with me and assume that it's a mix of asian characters and hieroglyphics for the time being, 'til I figure something out. hehe \\ BIC "Now, as you know, this is the ramathian alphabet. Scholars have kept the knowledge of how to speak this ancient tongue alive, by using it in professional situations. "Each character has it's own sound, which we've made correspond with a modern letter, for ease in translation." she pauses to look back at them, and grins, "Sometimes it looks rather daunting, or like it's completely unpronounceable. So you've just got to remember, this is a more gutteral language, and some sounds end up nearly silent, or softened, in the scheme of things." The pink and white 'dragon sits down, looking at each of her students in turn, "You've got the alphabet now in front of you, and above you, so would anyone like to try sounding out the ramathian alphabet?" \\ OOC: For that, if anybody decides to do it, write the phonetic how to say engish letters in your post. Rather than typing "U, R, K' type "Yoo, Arr, Kay" etc. And don't worry, she'll go around asking if anybody knows the second set of pronunciations for each character. (For example, U is both Yoo and Uh) Â Maybe even a third! (I must go through the alphabet and see how many variations are used for each letter. hehe)
Jac scratched her head. She decided to try how to say her last name, she always thought she said it wrong anyway! Fluffing up a bit, she says, "Eem-buh-pahj...Did I say that right? She blinks her purple eyes and looks at her teacher.
Nafel winces, unable to answer Eka in Ramathian. "Only 1000? Wow, you're a lot younger then me! I'm 1500. Yes, being small does have it's advantages. I was always kind've a runt among others of my age..." She trails off. Looking at the teacher, she observes the board, trying to burn the characters into her memory.
Eka nodded. She was surprised also by Nafel age but it didnÂ’t bother her because all of her siblings were older then her. Eka then also looked at the board at the alphabet that the teacher had written. To her that would be harder to memorize that then learning to speak in Ramathian. She looked at them and tried writing out her name. She looked down at her own writing she was not to happy with how it looked compared to the teachers.
Nafel looks at the board as well. She tries to write one of her spell words, and it looks little better then Eka's. She continues to write simple words, and as long as she has the picture reference, her writing looks okay. She's beginning to get the hang of it, and smiles proudly. She looks up at the teacher, raising her hand to ask a question. "Um, Teacher? What about punctuation marks?"
Tryphaena nods, ivory horns dancing with her pink mane of hair as she does. "Exactly, Jac! Very good. She decides to momentarily elaborate on that point, "Many surnames come from Ramathian, when it was a constantly spoken tongue. So while having a Ramathian last name may not be a clear indicator of being tied to ancient scholarly family lines, it's a rather good place to start." she winks. Tryphaena smiles broadly at Nafel, "Ah, punctuation marks! I'm glad you asked!" she turns back to the board, and sits down, using her digitigrade paws to write on it once more. "Original Ramathian had no puncuation marks, like we do, excepting the apostrophe." she marks one on the board as an example. "Apostrophes, besides marking contractions, were also used to end a sentence. A single apostrophe marked a contraction when it was between two letters, and was a period or a question mark, at the end of the sentence, which was decided when you read it, by how the sentence was worded. A dual apostrophe at the end of the sentence meant a stronger emotional statement or question. Much like our exclamation points today. No dual apostrophes were found inbetween words - they were solely reserved for the end." She looks back at all of them, grinning, "Because ramathian is more of a picture-type language, or as those studying earth would call, hieroglyphics, the ramathian characters represent sounds and emotions. Exact translation is pretty much all in the eye of the reader."
Eka watched as the teacher explained about the punctuation marks and question marks. She took down a few notes about what she said. Â Eka didnÂ’t know much about the old planet that everyone else called earth so she was happy to now know a little more about it. Â Eka tried a few more times trying to write out some of the symbols and was getting a little better but then remembered something her sister had taught her. She used her telekinesis to move around her pen on the paper. It worked well but she couldnÂ’t keep it up for long. Maybe when she got older she tough.
Nafel catches a glimpse of Eka's pen movement. She stares, not having seen this particaular trick before. When Eka lets the pen drop, she says "Wow... How do you do that?" She take some notes in her small notepad about the punctuation, and then looks back to Eka. She waits for a reply. The grammer confuses her, but she hopes she'll get it soon.
