  • Description

Nume is, among the Jaqgvolks, considered one of those who are aesthetically pleasing to look at. Standing at 5'7, she is not quite beautiful, though she could be, were it not for her complete disregard for the way she looks. Her limbs are well proportioned, with long arms to match long legs and a tall, thin neck. Her hands, as well, are long, at least in the finger, and look a bit dainty when compared to the other hard-working thills of the Jaqgvolk tribe. Her body, from head to ankle, are covered in short, thick feathers, superbly soft to the touch. They puff out around her chest and hips, while longer, thinner feathers create a crest along her collarbone, colored smoky gray-black. On each one, a strange eye marking appears in the center, fading in color from white to icy blue in the center. This crest reappears around her waist, covering her hips and her upper thighs in a sort of mini-skirt of feathers. Atop her head is what appears to be another crest, but is actually a sort of antenna. These feathers are more curved and round, as well as fuzzy, like those of a baby bird, set atop long, thin quills.

The underside of her jaw and her throat are colored an icy blue, with black outlining the edges of each marking. More black lines lead from the inner corners of her eye to the corners of her mouth, curving around her beak in a gentle slope. These colors reappear on her tail feathers, which resemble those of the terran peacock; long quills with bits of white fluff attached, the only dash of color being the 'eyes', which are black-rimmed with blue 'pupils.' Nume's own eyes are green, breaking the pattern. Her face is rarely seen in the desert among the Jaqgvolks, but she is easily recognized by her mask, which displays both her vanity and her inner fire; it is dressed in the fiery feathers of a fenix--with the occasional dark accents thrown in--and the scales of a Spitting Tmuka, a few of which were painted with some of the reptile's poison mixed in, creating an interesting array of colors. The beak of this mask is painted black, as opposed to her own which is pure white, and rubbed with shaved pieces of sparkling stones, making it glitter in the sunlight.

Nume's clothes are often a contrast to her extravagant mask; though she weaves them herself, she finds her identity is enough to convince people of her fire, and to wear clothes that were more for show than work would be over-doing it. So she wears a complex series of straps and bits of cloth, which do not interfere with her wings when she flies or constrict her tail when she walks. The straps wrap around her arms and shoulders, as well as under her collarbone, where a length of cloth falls to cover her chest and some of her stomach. The straps criss-cross her back then, resting between and under her wings, before they fold themselves over and under the base of her tail and wrap around her waist, where another length of cloth falls to mid-thigh and covers her more vulnerable areas. Her hands and feet, while clear of feathers, are covered in small yellow scales, and tipped with black, curved talons.

Nume considers herself clever, though perhaps not more so than any other particularly clever person. She's usually the first the niotis turn to when they want to hide from their caretakers, or need a new, fun prank to play, or a game that no one's ever heard of. She's not all that clever when it comes to outsmarting people and making them do what she wants unless she really puts her mind to it, and even then, she usually doesn't come up with a truly brilliant plan until a few days later, after thinking it over until the situation was upside down. Despite all that, she's also rational; she tends to think before she acts, and likes to consider all the different options before coming to a conclusion, the one she hopes is the correct answer. Whenever she's called upon as a playmate or the 'idea girl' by her younger companions, she ensures her games require the niotis to stay with the group, weaving between people and being underfoot nearly all the time.

Even with her calm, rational way of approaching new situations, once she's comfortable with people, that ideology simply flies out the window; she becomes obnoxious and feisty, more prone to fighting and arguing than usual. She has a tendency to mock when she's upset, and likes to shove her face in someone else's while she does it, so as to annoy or upset the other person as much as she's been. Her vanity also shines through more with people she knows, especially among the Jaqgvolks; were one of her closest friends and companions to consider her ugly or stupid, she would take it worse than a complete stranger on the street thinking the same thing. She feels the need to impress her friends, even when that only means pulling pranks or weaving a beautiful dress. Were someone close to her to ask her to do an impossible task, she might very well drive herself crazy attempting to accomplish it. She's already half-way there, attempting to keep in good spirits with an entire community of people, and it's the odd things she sometimes does in order to stay on good terms with everyone that makes people consider her obnoxious.

The first years of Nume's life were spent with her mother, who lived in Shirrahk, on Dhruv. Nume never knew why she was always so cold, but her feathers had not fully grown in yet, and she suspected this might be part of the problem. Her mother was a Yki, born to live in the cold, but her father had been a passing merchant, and had only stayed as long as the continent was landlocked. Nume often dreamed of her father as a child, wondering what he looked like and where he might have come from--if she took after him, as she couldn't have her mother. She never got to find out, but another Jaqgvolk soon came, and when she discovered Nume, she told her mother of the desert they lived in, and that the cold might yet kill the young Jaqgvolk if she stayed. Her mother was sad to see her go, but agreed that the cold wasn't the best for her, and Nume left with the Jaqgvolk Soshlu, who took her back to the desert to live with other feathered Lukuo like herself.

There she met Tutkhu, who was also a new arrival. Everyone told her he'd been abandoned by his own mother, and Nume sought to make fast friends with him, something she succeeded at for quite some time; they became partners in crime, co-workers, teammates. So often were they left to their own devices that it wasn't long before they knew as much about the dangers of the desert as the other nioti, if not more because they'd both lived in danger-free areas for a time. They looked out for each other; and if Tutkhu was, perhaps, the more serious of the two, Nume more than made up for that in her own obnoxious, half-crazed frenzy. It went on like that until the Nomanp ceremony, where they received their adult masks and their second names. Tutkhu obtained his first, and everyone was properly impressed with the simplicity of it--it showed, in part, his clearness of mind and character, how unclouded his view of the world was by inconsequential things. Nume got hers next, and while it was beautiful, it was cluttered, loud--obnoxious. She was disappointed, and became even more so when Tutkhu reacted badly to the differences of their masks; he hadn't done the same reading she had beforehand, and it nearly broke their friendship.

It was explained to him afterward, and while Nume still waits to this day for some word from her best friend, she feels that she won't get it for a long while yet. As such, until that day, she's changed her given second name, Yfl, to one more fitting--Duocick. This, when stripped to a very basic level, means pride.
