Nope, you've done nothing wrong. :) I'm trying to set up proper permissions for the user groups. When a new user registers, their posts will be automatically moderated (to help with potential robot spammers). Once they've made a set amount of approved posts, their user group should automatically change and their posts will no longer be moderated. I think that the auto-group promotions just haven't kicked in properly just yet. They only run every so often, much like the trophy system.
