Is Numi in school at all? I was thinking that she could be on a school trip to Fautal's dig site in the Machina Ruins. When she is there I think that she and him accidentally got separated from the group that Fautal was giving a tour to inside one of the ruins. On the way out she can learn that not everyone other thant lukuo reject her.
