http://www.deviantart.com/download/124422906/Horsaphone_by_aisforaslan.jpg Yay for crazy art projects that drag you into black holes where you disappear for six months at a time? Yay. (: I apologize for the quality of the picture and lack of variations on the view, my black berry apparently only works during the day, when I am most definitely a nocturnal creature. Hiss. This was a project for my Design II class. The assignment was to design a personalized music instrument out of wood, that had to be a percussion instrument. I used to play the xylophone in high school, so my little light bulb went 'Ahhh, horse + xylophone = interesting idea?' The wood is African Padauk, cost me all of my pocket money and then some ): Took +/- 130 hours? I don't know. Three+ weeks worth of back breaking, ear ruining work for at least 5 - 6 hours a day. It's 15 inches long and 10 inches tall, very heavy (because it's hardwood). Anywho, I'm still stuck between narrowing my major. Going for Animation, Graphic Design or Sculpture. harhar. any other art majors? :3
Woah dude, just woah. That looks beautiful! You can really see the effort you put into it! How does it sound when played? I'm not an art anything and sadly my Uni won't let me take art courses for fun because the requirements are "Future studies of Art" D:
Thank you n_n It sounds really good, just like a xylophone. There are only three notes, because I didn't have enough time to do a full octave. Padauk is hardwood and really hard to work with, so it was really limiting with what you could do in the right amount of time. I was working right up until the critique. And my lungs were orange for two months afterward. x_x Aww, that's silly! My college is similar. I really want to take some computer programming classes, but I have to get special permission. Have no idea how to, though. And I want to take German too :(
-melt- i've been needing to reply this thread forever! poe, that thing is gorgy! man, i can't even imagine beginning to carve wood, let alone carve an instrument! amazing talent. yeah, i don't think i could handle a fine arts class on top of my studies as it is ;-; i would love to have a good reason to sketch, doodle, art during the school year but i'm soooo bogged down with class work, it's ridic. blah. and i see school just a month away! AHH.
That is awesome! I wish I knew how to do that. And using the ears like that was pure genius. I'm not even in college yet, although I'm taking art during high school. It's an open possibility.
