Tessera 43, 81383

A ‘clunk’ rang through the small back alley shack as Teolun Heulm let the head of an illegal seer role out of her hands and onto the floor. 30 puis had passed since the ban on magicka had been enforced and finding anyone willing to work behind closed doors was difficult and pricey. The seer who was now collapsed on the floor was alive, only in a toxin induced sleep, making it possible for Teolun to penetrate her mind and look for the answers she desired. But once again she came up empty handed.

For the last 10 pui she had been hiding in the slums of Romanskh, sneaking around to find ‘dragons desperate enough to take her money even though it meant breaking the law. So far she had seen seven different seers, only three of which had to be hypnotized into working for her. It meant leaving a trail in her wake but she was becoming desperate and taking risks was the only way she could see to continue.

Three days after the eclipse, while standing in line at one of the temporary refugee camps, Teolun had a strange encounter. In the line next to her an old thill turned to stare directly at her, eyes glazed over by the grip of the Sight, she raised her paw and pointed directly at Teolun’s heart and spoke.

“The dead should stay dead,

You have no future amongst the living.”

Usually Teolun would think nothing of the cries of a passing ‘dragon who thought themselves a seer. But these words were too close to the truth and she took them as a warning. That started her quest to find a seer who could see anything other than nothing in her future.

She left the sleeping body crumpled on the floor as she exited the small room that smelt heavily of burning incense. She left the building as casually as she could, shifting to walk on all fours. She made her way off the small side street to lose herself in a more populated area. Reaching one of the main streets in the community she stopped to read a wall dedicated for posting flyers of people looking for employment or lost pets. This was how she had been able to find a few of the earlier seers still willing to practice, until they were arrested for not being smart enough to go underground. But this time it wasn’t an ad for services that caught her attention, it was a 'Wanted' poster with a picture that looked a lot like her.

She made sure no one was looking as she shifted to her biped form and ripped the poster from the wall. It was her, or at least the memory someone had of her. Underneath the picture it warned that she was dangerous, possibly a spy or possibly someone looking to take advantage of seers. Her heart rate picked up and she began to worry. Someone had remembered her enough to draw up this picture, to try and warn the rest of the city. But it wasn’t official, it was no government release, only a local ‘dragon trying to be a hero. She crumpled the paper between her hands and threw it in a nearby garbage can. Even if it wasn’t official, it was still dangerous. It was time to get out of Romanskh.

But there was the crux. The teleporters were down and she had no mode of transportation. She needed to get to another city, out of Mansukh all together or a hiding place. She pulled the hair sticks out of her bun and let her long purple hair fall down around her face to act as a disguise and shifted back to all fours. She walked with no destination in mind, but she walked with conviction, her mind racing to come up with some sort of escape plan.

Astald was out on one of his "shopping" runs. He found a great deal of product in what most other 'dragons threw away. He spent time rummaging through bin after bin and dumpster after dumpster. Due to his small stature, a gift from his father, he would have to make many trips to take all of his findings back to his place. Instead, his clever mind devised a cart of sorts, instead of wheels it had six legs that would walk along when he held onto a handle at the end of what could only be described as a leash.

It was on one such run that he had an odd chance encounter as he approached a garbage can and was nearly struck by a wadded up poster. Luckily he was quick and he avoided walking in the way of the projectile. He blinked beneath his hood and watched the purple haired 'dragon practicly race off. He looked in and picked up the poster and walked, well in his case jogged after her the cart going "tick-it-tee tick-it-tee tick-it-tee" behind him. "Pardon," he said softly, "But I believe you've dropped this..." he handed the wadded up poster over, "... almost at my head..." he grinned a bit beneath his hood.

So engrossed in her own thoughts, Teolun didn’t even acknowledge the sound of multiple legs coming up behind her. She didn’t catch the first ‘Pardon’ that was uttered at her but the poster being shoved in front of her jolted her back to the present. She was confused about what was going on and her first reaction was to give the small ‘dragon an accusing glare, as she assumed that he had been watching her.

She aggressively pulled the poster out of his hands, crushing it even more between her hands. But it was his hands that caught her attention, or at least the tattoos that were momentarily visible on his arms. Her affinity for Fronima was hard to hide and her facial features soften as she began to suspect that he hadn’t looked at the image. She couldn’t make out his face as it was partially hidden behind a heavy hood, so instead she looked over at the strange mechanical pet that had arrived with him.

“I do apologize for that.” She didn’t really, but she said it any way, she hadn’t even seen him so she believed she was completely free of fault in the situation. She began to fidgit with the paper her in hands, tearing little pieces off of the corners and letting them fall to the street. “Are you a tradesman by chance?” She knew it was a long shot, but she was trying to piece together a way out of the city. And given the look of the collection in the cart she assumed that this ‘dragon made some shipping in and out of the city to get more parts. Maybe she could be shipped out as well.

As the poster was torn from his hands he pulled them back, but he had a bad habit of speaking with his hands. He noticed her staring at them and winced cursing at himself for his moment of boldness, it really wasn't like him. "I... well I suppose I am... most of the things I build I build from scrap. But..." he looked around a bit more rolling his shoulders some and checking the position of his hood, "I occassionally have the need to order parts, some of the finer items just can't be picked out of the refuse." he smiled a bit his teeth gleemed slightly and might even catch some ambient light, "You looking for a repair'dragon?" he tilted his head a bit to look at the crumpled piece of paper that was slowly being destroyed piece by piece, "Or maybe require a new construction? I build things too, and lucky for you I need a bit of work..." he patted the crawler cart some, "This is a sample of my work..."

Looking around some more he shuddered, "Uh... perhaps we should go to my shop? It's... more private when it comes to talking business." his fingers moved a bit thumb touching first finger, then middle, then ring, then pinky and then back in reverse order while the other hand moved in reverse simultaniously and at a rapid rate. He learned that his tattoos tended to draw attention and attention usually didn't end well for him.

Order parts, so there were shipments coming in, but nothing going out. That wasn’t exactly what she was looking for. She didn’t let this show on her face, keeping a calm, interested look on her features. She caught the smile that flashed across her partially hidden face, picking up ques for what she had to do next. She also didn’t let her paranoia show, for a second she was sure that a group of ‘dragons across the street had been staring at her. Recognizing her? Maybe being around his mechanic would stop the whispers from floating between loose lips.

“Now this is a lovely piece of handy work.” She knelt down and gave the cart a quick glance over, not being to sure what she was looking at. But she knew a man who was proud of his work when she saw one. She hoped flattery could take her a long way. “I guess you could say I’m looking for something constructed. Do you build any sort of personal transportation devices?” She stood back up to face him, while also putting his body between her and any other passersby.

“See, I’ve been shopping around for something to travel between cities in. But I’m not a fan of all these new cookie cutter styles. I’m interested in things that are much more... unique.” She listened to his suggestion and nodded, watching his own nervous twitch that was showing on his hands. “Lead the way, I’d love to see what other creations a mind such as yours could come up with.” She gave him an endearing smile, all the while trying to think of the proper ways to manipulate him.

Astald smiled as she looked over his cart and he nodded, "yes, well it helps that I don't have to carry all the materials on my own. This one can link with several others to carry say... sheet metal." He glanced over his shoulder as the others moved on by and he started on his way, "follow me, it isnt far." The cart began to walk after him with its metallic "tick-tee-it-tee tick-it-tee"

After a few turns and several crowded alleys he looked around noticing several cameras still in place. Astald relaxed a little and went down some concrete stairs to a metal gated door. Using a key under the front flap of his hood he unlocked it and it accordion folded into the door frame. On the actual door was a key pad on which he rapidly punched in a long series of numbers. A soft click and the door swung open. "Come on in..." He stepped in and flipped a switch and several soft lights flickered to life.

The shop had at least three different work benches and some wire net hung from portions of the ceiling and the walls and from them hung tools and small gadgets, some things that looked as if they fit over hands or feet, or even a few that fit on the head and over eyes. One wall had about half a dozen disc shaped items that bore a remarkable resemblance to the walking car that followed Astald through the door. Finally in one corner was a cot and a hammock, a small fridge and a desk with a simple camping burner and a few canned items with no labels. On the same wall was an open doorway. After letting the new potential customer in he closed the door and turned a wheel on the backside that shifted six small tumblers into place, he lowered his hood revealing his proportionally large ears and Anubi features as well as a set of eyes that almost matched his tattoos, "there... this way..." He let the leash go and the spider cart remained in place as he let the way through the open doorway, up a ramp and into a loading bay with a large garage door to the outside. There were several vehicle carcasses there partially covered by tarps and one item much smaller covered completely by a tarp. "Lemme know your needs and I'll likely be able to figure something out."

Teolun fell into step a pace behind the small ‘dragon, giving the cart another once over as it started to move. There was something mysteriously life like about it that creep her out but also fascinated her. Maybe he would have other machines with legs at his shop.

It took a few minutes for them to a set of concrete stairs that made Teolun question what she was doing. The place looked secured, the arden had to be a well skilled ‘dragon to have earned himself this kind of a facility, even if it was down a few alleys she didn’t know. The property market was crazy in Romanskh.

The outside of the building worked as an excellent red herring for the inside of the building. It was just what you would expect to see in any mechanics shop. The walls and ceiling were lined with tools and parts that she could not even name and others that she would never have been able to dream up on her own. She also noticed the lodging in the back, where she assumed her new acquaintance lived. Definitely an arden devoted to the cause to sleep in the same room as his creations. The other thing that shocked her was the appearance of the ‘dragon under the hood. Part Anubi for sure, and given his size and tattoo, part Fey? A combination that would probably lead to some potent magical abilities, but here he was, playing with grease and sheet metal. There was probably a story in there somewhere, but she wasn’t particularly interested just yet.

She followed him over to another section of the building, golden eyes trying to take in everything that was being shown to her. Maybe today would be her lucky day after all.

“Hmm, well nothing flashy,” she didn’t need to draw more attention to herself, “and I really only need it to carry one or two ‘dragons.” She didn’t have any friends, room for one would be plenty, “and the ability to cover uneven terrain would be superb but it’s not a deal breaker.” She walked up to the partially formed machines and ran her hand along one of the curved surfaces. “Money is not an issue.” Cults were a good investment, if you were the treasurer anyway.

However, never haven driven anything before, that could be an issue.

He nodded slowly and then his eyes lit up and he threw back the tarp on the completely covered item. Beneath it was a motorcycle, well most of one and no engine. "I see... so a car... with good springs... oh you want wheels or legs?" he said not exactly looking at her as he began to work at what appeared to be the rear of the vehicle. Besides being gutted for all intents and purposes it looked fairly normal, until you looked where the wheels should be. There were what appeared to be four hexagonal pads laid out in a diamond formation. He worked at a several of the couplings to the pads. He removed his hood completely and his translucent insectoid wings were visable and he half flew half ran back and forth from a bench with wires, connectors, and a great number of other parts on it and they soon became lost in the construction. "Money is no issue?" he chuckled as he reached between the mass of cables and a little spark flew he jumped and grumbled about the battery and quickly disconnected it, "That's good... I imagine a number of the parts required might cost... well that is if you want it to be a quality product. It doesn't have to look nice to work nice." he peeked up over the motorcycle pausing from his work for a bit, "Any other needs or wants for the vehicle?"

Teo stepped back quickly as the fey pulled off the tarp, feeling like she was being shown some kind of magic trick. She continued to watch in silence as he worked, amazed at the speed at which things were coming together. Did he dream up such designs in his head? Could she steal them from him, his dreams and visions? Could she turn them into nightmares?

Watching the arden work made her own mind wonder into her our profession. There was so much she wanted to try, and so few volunteers. Thanks to the feeling of a herd of angry villagers at her back, Teolun felt the need to flee more than the need to experiment. The small spark that erupted somewhere on the half formed vehicle made her jump, bringing her thoughts back to the present.

She met his eyes over the machine, contemplating the question. Her lack of experience with motor vehicles stopped her from asking about engine power or fuel consumption, what she was really wondering was if it could be painted black. But she knew that would take more time so she didn’t bother.

“Could it travel without making noise?”

Realizing that her last question could lead to suspicion, she tried to cover with some flippant small talk.

“I do hope you can forgive my poor manners, but I do not believe that I even asked your name!”

He smirked a bit and wiped his hands on a rag as he stood, "It could run fairly quiet... some dampeners, fronima couplers instead of wheels with berings but those can be risky considering, perhaps magnetic coupling..." he nodded slowly tapping his chin, "Suppose you want it painted black too ey?" he chuckled softly and walked around toward the thill, "S'ok I don't usually deal with folks that buy commercial gear if you know what I mean," he took a deep breath and blinked, "You didn't? Oh, I see, well the name is Astald but most call me Lyts. You?" he offered a hand in greeting but glanced back at the vehicl,e his eyes obviously working over some problem in his brain, but occasionally glancing back.

He noticed she seemed a little on edge, probably the poster. Was she wanted by authorites? What did it matter if she could pay? This could probably pay for another trip. But there was something about her... she was off a little. He couldn't quite put his finger on it. "What sort of fule did you want it to run off of? Could make it electric it would only need to be plugged in oh once a day maybe day and a half if you pushed it, possibly some fossil fuel backup those would be louder of course."

She nodded along to the information about noise reduction but her eyes focused intently on his when he echoed her own thoughts back at her. Could he read her thoughts? Or was it just because it also hinted at the idea of stealth? He definitely seemed to be hinting towards some sort of illegal activities. But his casual manner suggested that he didn’t mind so she went along with it.

“Nice to meet you Lyts, you can call me Teo.” She rarely gave her last name; she wasn’t a fan of it. And to her, whatever she wasn’t a fan of wasn’t important. She even reached out to take his hand in her blue hued palm.

The ill fated poster had been safely tucked into her bag as they had walked to the shop. Or at least whatever was left of it. “Well might as make it electric then, since magicka is out of the question. A real shame that is.” She gave a sigh to show her regret. Lyts had probably felt the same quench that most ‘dragons had felt with the ban. The ban on their magical energy source probably led to having to more – primitive – methods.

“Your pace is very impressive, I’m sorry that I’m slowing you down with my lack of mechanical knowledge. I trust your professional opinion on technical matters.” She kept her friendly demeanor, even if he was on to her. She had always been more comfortable with a lie than the truth. "How quickly can you put the whole thing together?"

"Nice name Teo..." he smirked and tapped his chin somemore walking over to one of the gutted hulks and uncovered it. It looked dead, a skeleton. Essentially that's what is was when he found it though it had a bit of the meat hanging from it and when it got to his shop he quickly cleaned it off. Surprisingly it looked rust free and solid.

"Oh it's alright, at least you know basicly what you want... I've had worse customers," he began to mimic someone rather flightly twiddling his fingers all about and changing the pitch of his voice, "I want...a a thing... that moves..." he rolls his eyes and chuckles and grumbles. Circling what was a four seater family car most likely he nodded slowly, "This'll do..." he looked up, "Mmm... it can be together in a couple of pui... running and mostly bug free a paquite maybe paquite and a half?" he made a seesaw motion with one hand, "All depends on how much of a hurry you are in and how powerful the people who made that poster are." He glanced to her and quirked a brow.

Astald didn't mind working with illegal items or even possible criminals as long as the trouble stayed out of his shop. He scratched a non-existant scratch on the back of his neck, "Most of the major components I have round about here so I should have the wheels and shocks on by tomorrow evening. Some of the drivetrain might be a little more difficult to come by but by the time I'm done it should nearly beable to climb nearly anything." he walked to a corner that had some rather large tires that easily stood as tall as he was and he tilted his head from one side to the other at them, "who knows whatelse I'll think up..." he smirked, "this stuff just sort of comes to me..." he paused and watched her again, "Somethings off about you miss... that doesn't really bother me but just so you know I don't want trouble here." he pointed very firmly toward the floor, "As long as you can keep it away the deal is still on. If trouble infests my shop then well..." he shruged, "lets say I'm my number one priority. We clear?" His ears rotated forward and he quirked a brow. Some have considered the seriousness in the tiny Anubi/Fey but most haven't made that mistake twice.

He switched from friendly comic to serious deal maker so casually that Teo felt like the universe was laughing at her. Go figure she’d run into someone with morals as grey as hers. Money could be a very influential player, but was it enough to buy his silence? Was a paquite a safe amount of time to stick around? There were too many questions floating around and she was tired of not being able to find any answers. This was all hinging on the question of how much power the poster makers had. This whole ordeal could be one big overreaction.

She watched him closely as she moved about the floor, the whole time keeping her calm and friendly smile on her face. Which was probably one of the more disturbing things she could have done. She let out a shallow chuckle at the comment of being “off”.

“Aren’t all the ‘dragons worth knowing today a little 'off'?” She inclined her head and mimicked his raised brow. “Besides, I’m interested in avoiding trouble as much as you; I am plagued by a simple misunderstanding.” She waved her had in front of her to mime something that has been carried away by the wind and taken to new proportions. This was not to say that she wasn’t worried, she knew not to underestimate him, and she also knew that she shouldn’t underestimate the dangers of a panicked community.

“Should I leave it to you then? Or would you like a partial down payment before I leave, as a promise to return?”

Astald nodded slowly satisfied, "Ahh I suppose that'll do just fine." he motioned for her to follow back to the workshop he moved to a specific workbench and picked up a pen and tapped it on his chin. He snatched a scrap of paper and scrawled a slew of numbers on the paper doing the math in his head, "Somewhere in the ball park of five thousand khasi..." he stared at her a moment and glanced at the ceiling of the workshop and back to her again, "I also have an apartment..." he motioned upwards, "If you wish to keep out of sight I'll throw it in with the price of your vehicle if you like."

Not waiting for her to respond he flipped the paper over and began to scrawl the basic shape of the stripped carbody and began to add pieces here and there nodding slowly and making enlarged images in various corners, "Yes, yes... that'll work nicely... and bucket seats.... re-enforced framming here and here..." he made lines as he spoke, "This'll be quite a project... loads of fun."

Teolun followed him to the work bench and watched as he drew out a few columns of numbers. Teolun would never admit it but she had only a tiny grasp for mathematical equations. It comes from never being taught. Her writing and reading skills were also sub-par, one of the other reasons she spent a large portion of her time in dreams. She could read the final numbers written down but was relieved when the numbers he said matched up with the one’s in her head.

She looked back up at him when he mentioned the use of his apartment and gave him a disapproving finger wag. “Now, now. A thill needs to keep some of her secrets.”

She hadn’t stopped thinking about her situation, she rarely ever stopped thinking about self-preservation. She’d get by.

She pulled one of her Khorta cards out of a small pouch around her neck and flashed it at Lyts to get his attention away from his blueprints. She admired an arden who was so engrossed in his work, but she needed him to concentrate on this for a second.

“It’s safe, no one will be able to tie you to me through this card. It has a few extra security measures than most.” Since most of her façade had been pulled away she thought she might as well be frank with him about payment. Khorta cards were generally fairly safe and secure on their own, but she still hated the idea of leaving an electronic trail. This one was linked to a fake business and under name that she had taken up as an alias for money purposes only.

She stole a look down at the drawing and felt a strange sense of disbelief at realizing that she would soon be the owner of vehicle. Definitely one of her biggest impulse buys ever.

Astald blinked nad looked at her for a moment as the finger wagged at him, "Oh, I didn't mean we'd be sharing it... actually..." he looked up and to the side as if trying to recall something, "I haven't stayed in it in oh a paquite or so..." he shrugged some, "I usually get a little carried away with my work and by that time I either pass out in the tires or over on the cot there." he shrugged, "Like I said... it's up to you. If you change your mind it'll probably be there still. Let me know ey?" He glanced at the card and nodded slowly, "Sound perfect... might have to tell me about some of those extra security measures some time. They might come in handy." He tapped his chin a little and began glancing at the blueprints again.

The idea of not sharing it did sound slightly better, but she was terribly uncomfortable with the idea of anyone knowing where she was. So she turned down the offer again.

“I will not be forced into false captivity because of some over reacting vigilantes.” She exclaimed with a little bit of her own over the top flair, hoping that she was managing to downplay her own guilt in the affair. But even sharing that much information probably meant that Lyts would be able to figure out her story if he got wind of any rumors. She hoped that he would stay nice and busy for the next few pui to avoid any such discovery. He may be fine working with shady customers at the moment, but if he was ever concerned for his safety she wouldn’t blame him for turning her away, but even then, she didn’t suspect him of wanting to turn her in.

She spotted the card reader over on one of the cleaner tables and went over to swipe her car, punching in 2000 khasi as a down payment, hoping that it would cover the cost of any extra parts Lyts would need to acquire. “Maybe I’ll tell you as part of the rest of the payment.” She finished the transaction and walked back over to his current work bench. Reaching into her small bag she pulled out a smaller poster, one in better shape than the one she had nearly ripped to shreds, and put it on Astald’s table.

“When you want me to stop by again hang this flyer, upside down, in the area where we met.” She had her reasons for her cloak and dagger behavior, but she also enjoyed the game it provided. The poster was actually a small, slightly cryptic cult advertisement. Less ‘dragons knew about it in this area so she wasn’t worried about it being recognized. “And if that is all, I’ll be off.”

Astald had been giving her a riased brow at the flair and after a moment chuckled. After the downpayment was deposited he took the flyer and looked it over and nodded slowly, "Interesting..." he looked at it at different angles finally looking up, "Alright... stay as safe as you can, I'd like to collect the rest of the payment." he grinned and walked to the door opening it for her. Once through the door he would close it up tight again and get back to work, grinding and attaching small componets that larger pieces would eventually connect to or fit through.

Several pui passed and it was almost as if the project took on a life of its own. The Anubi would leave and return. Shipments would arrive in boxes and crates of all sizes. Soon the once stripped chassi had all four independant wheels, a drive train, a durable plex windshield and windows, even doors! Astald slept intermittantly and sometimes even in the seats of the vehicle, usually in the back bench seat. Even for his small stature it was more comfortable. Before resuming work each time he would walk around the project tapping his chin softly with a finger, making light marks with a marker here and there and shortly after welds, holes and brackets took their place. Finally the engine arrived and after checking to see if it ran at all he afixed it to the mounts in the front. He left the engine charge for a full two pui to ensure it was fully charged and then began connecting the backups. Soon would be the first test run and he figured that perhaps Teo would want to see it. So once he was finished putting in the electric motor and the machina backup he made a trip out to place the poster upsidedown on a building near the trash can where they met. After he returned and began to workout some little bugs and grind off some rough edges.

Teolun spent the days moving around to different sections of the city and keeping a low profile. Which was hard enough to do without a vigilante after her. Low profiles were boring. She almost went so far as to buy herself a brand new wardrobe to stay busy but decided that the vehicle was enough spending for now. Instead she spent time weaving herself into dreams of ‘dragons who were dreaming about driving. She wasn’t sure if it got her anything like a real driving experience but it made her feel a little more confident about getting behind the controls.

After a few puis she began to return to her and Lyts first meeting place in search of the sign. It wasn’t there on her first couple of visits. When she would creep by at different times in the day so that no one would start to think of her as a regular. The only plus she had noticed during her city travels was that the poster, while still common enough in the initial area of discovery, hadn’t spread much further.

When finally going by, merely a few hours after Lyts has been there, Teo quickly noticed that sign and made her way down the path she clearly remembered the mechanic taking her down not so long ago. Standing in front of the familiar metal gated door she regretted not leaving extra instructions to leave the door open. After looking around for a few moments, she pressed a button that she hoped was a fully functional door bell.

Lyts was working on some final touches before he felt it would be ready for a test drive. The button wasn't a doorbell, however it did buzz inside the workshop and he lifted his head and blinked a few times. He made his way over to one wall and turned on a small screen. The screen buzzed softly and finally a picture showed. It flashed threw several images, as he had the entire alley way covered. Several images showed Teo and he pressed a button and the door buzzed and a the door made a metallic clicking sound. She would be free to enter the workshop.

Lyts rubbed his hands a bit in a rag to get the grime from his work off. A few strides took him to a workbench that had a sink for cleaning parts. He rinsed his hand and splashed a few handfuls over his face using a fresh rag to dry it as he made his way to the workshop.
