Time for PF's annual post. Yay! I was very kindly reminded to come and show my face here again and I saw the book recommendation thread on the home page. So I figured, why not... Anyway, Through Wolf's Eyes by Jane Lindskold, along with the rest of the series. I found this series to be quite exciting. As the series develops the real fantasy and magic of the the world unfolds. The books are about this girl raised by Wolves in this world where there are animals, and Animals which are highly intelligent and capable of communication. The Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett. These books are hilarious and oddly insightful. There are dozens, and they DO NOT have to be read in order (though it is oddly rewarding to do so). My favorites were Night Watch, Small Gods, Thief of Time, THUD!, Maskerade, Going Postal, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, and The Wee Free Men. The humor reminds me of Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (which I recommend as well, those books are hilarious.) But in my opinion, Pratchett is better because many of his books have deeper meaning than just the humor. The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Johnathan Stroud. A series about a world where wizards summon creatures called djinni to do their bidding. An ancient djinni named Bartimaeus is summoned by a wizard in training, and Bartimaeus does all in his power to make the boy's life as difficult as possible. The books are hilarious, the character Bartimaeus is one of my favorites of all time. The third book is just wonderful. Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls, by Jane Lindskold. About a mentally handicapped girl who hears inanimate objects talking. Cutbacks have forced her out of the asylum where she was raised to live on her own. She is taken in by a large street gang lead by a young man who calls himself Head Wolf. The Redwall series! By Brian Jacques. Im sure a lot of you have already read these, but just in case. I found them delightful. Eventually they all start to sound the same, but just for something to read, to get your mind in another world, they are quite fun. These books can be read out of order without any real loss of plot. Obviously my favorite was Outcast of Redwall (its mostly about a ferret). But I also liked Long Patrol, and Salamandastron, any books with the rabbits. The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien. This is kind of a heavy read, but I loved it. This book is set in the First Age of Tolkien's world (The Trilogy takes place in the Third Age I believe). If you were one of those people who hated the five page long descriptions in Tolkien's Trilogy, I don't recommend this book. MYST, The Book of Atrus, The Book of Ti'Ana, and the Book of D'Ni by Rand and Robyn mller with David Wingrove. Lovely books. They take you into the world of the people who created the world books that are used in the MYST computer games. And those are my long winded recommendations. >_> I hope they help someone. I am going to have to read some of those currently on the list. Bwahahaha!
Sweeeet. A lot of those sound really great, and I don't think I've read even half of what you suggested. :s I'll definitely be sure to add those all to the book listings.
Because I want to say it before Lautir, David Clement-Davies, Fire Bringer and The Sight. Both were awesome.
Pratchett and Douglas Adams are brilliant :) I really the Silmarillion too, it seemed pretty packed, having a LOT of stories covered in brief. Has anyone read the Children of Húrin? Its another Tolkien (though it was put together by his son Christopher) set in the second age.
Guess I'll have to get my librarian dignity back by suggesting something new. Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer 6 books so far with another in the wings. It is a Young Adult level book so it's a very quick an easy read. But I think it's pretty fitting for this site since it combines sci-fi elements with fantasy elements. And what really drew me to the series, a plotting criminal child mastermind millionaire. There is even a movie in the works!
Any of the dragons of pern novels by Anne McCaffrey and now her son Todd, hes continued them quite well :3 But also a short story called "no-one moticed the cat" but Anne aswell, its a very quirky short which i did enjoy very much :3
I think I've heard of Artemis Fowl before. Can't say I've read them though. I have a gift certificate for Chapters, I think. One of those book stores anyway. :) I'll certainly have to pick up a few of the ones that have been recommended. I can't believe I haven't added any of the Dragon Riders of Pern books though. oO; DRoP is pretty much classic sci-fi/fantasy. I'll have to remedy this shortly. I think "Moreta" is probably one of my favourite ones in that series... it is so hard to pick though. :/ Such interesting characters.
Oh my gurd, I posted that 4 years ago. But on subject...Every person ever should read Ender's Game before it comes out in movie form! SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE YOU HAVE NO IDEA!
