Involvement in Online Communities Survey

Just had this hit my inbox and thought it might be applicable to a few of you. :) Feel free to participate if you feel it is relevant, and if you happen to have the time.

The goal of this study is determine the relationship between involvement in online communities and adolescent self-esteem, if any exists. Because 95% of adolescents use the internet on a regular basis in the United States, it is important to understand how this involvement impacts youth (Pew Research Center, 2012). Because self-esteem is so closely tied to many other areas of normative psychosocial development – self-concept, social confidence and interactions, depression – it is an important measure in examining long-term impacts of extended involvement in online communities. The study will also examine whether an extroverted or introverted personality type has any impact on the strength of this relationship.

Research is currently being conducted on the impact of involvement in online communities on adolescent self esteem. For this study, online communities are being defined as composed primarily of people who do not normally interact offline. Examples may be interest or hobby forums, gaming communities, fandom websites, etc.

An Institutional Review Board responsible for human subjects research at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research.

We are asking willing participants who are 18 or older and involved in these types of online communities to complete a short survey for this study. We estimate that the survey will take no more than approximately 10 minutes to complete. The survey is completely anonymous, and no identifying information will be collected. There is no cost or risk to participating, but you will have the opportunity to contribute to expanding knowledge in this area of study.
